Collaborations

The North Carolina Farmworker Health Program (NCFHP) collaborates with programs, organizations, and groups across the state working to improve health outcomes for farmworkers and their families.

Comprehensive Advanced Medical Program of Spanish (CAMPOS)

The CAMPOS program, located within the UNC School of Medicine and administered by the Office of Medical Education (OME), identifies approximately 20-30 first-year medical students who are intermediate to advanced speakers of Spanish to enroll in the CAMPOS program each year. In addition to strengthening medical Spanish skills, students are expected to engage in 10 hours of community service each year providing a service to Spanish-speaking underserved communities.

NCFHP serves as the primary site for the community service component. NCFHP also provides educational sessions at UNC on farmworker health, including information about North Carolina’s farmworker population, occupational health concerns, and strategies for providing culturally appropriate and effective outreach and enabling services.

East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine

NCFHP contracts with Eastern Carolina University’s School of Dental Medicine to increase access to dental services for farmworkers through the school’s Community Service Learning Centers (CSLCs). Several of NCFHP’s farmworker health grantees refer patients to ECU’s CSLCs for basic, preventative and limited restorative dental care at a reduced cost.

Farmworker Advocacy Network

NCFHP is a collaborating member of the Farmworker Advocacy Network (FAN), a statewide network of organizations working to improve living and working conditions of farmworkers and poultry workers in North Carolina. Since 2003, FAN organizations have collaborated to bring workers’ voices into the public discourse on farmworker issues.

Activities include education with farmworkers about health management and disease prevention. FSHA coordinates with outreach workers to bring student groups to farmworker camps near Benson, North Carolina.

Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF)

Student Action with Farmworkers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change.

SAF works with farmworkers, students, and advocates in the Southeast and nationwide to create a more just agricultural system. Each year, SAF trains approximately 20-25 students on farmworker issues, and places approximately 5-7 students to work full-time with NCFHP funded health clinic sites. Interns and fellow work directly with rural health clinics in North Carolina, providing health education, case management, and interpretation for farmworkers.
